The most effective (and healthiest) way to satisfy your sweet tooth…

Dear Springboarders,

Let’s face it, being surrounded by the constant tease of sugary snacks each day is hard work to not cave into our cravings. If you are like me, and have a major sweet tooth, the constant reminder in shops, on tv, on the internet can cause us to become overwhelmed and cave in. Before we know it, we are through a whole tub of ice cream and feeling a tad guilty. No don’t get me wrong, I am of the opinion that every now and again we should reward ourselves with a sweet treat. It is however the days when we are trying to be disciplined to eat healthily that we need a bit of help. And I have a great way, which I use to great effect personally, to keep the sugary desires managed in a healthy way. It’s actually very enjoyable!

I think of a sweet tooth, and our sugar cravings, as an unhealthy addiction. People, me included, try to go completely cold turkey, cutting all sweet snacks from their diet in order to cut the addiction for good. Now that’s sound great in theory but in practice it’s a giant step to take. I feel a more sustainable way is to wean yourself off the processed sugar gradually. Such a drastic cut will no doubt be unmanageable and negatively affect our mood. This is then likely to result in a sugar ‘blowout’ where the need for sugar becomes so great that if we do buckle, it becomes dramatic. Instead of the usual one tub of icecream, its two. Instead of 2 doughnut’s, its five. And so on and so forth. We then end up taking one step forward and five back.
